Our house is a Canadian Beef Loving household. Beef and Eggs are a must have! If we manage to run out of either of those, we have to hit the grocery store.
Ground Beef is one of those things that if I am absolutely stuck for a dinner idea, I just take it out, set it to thawing, and start searching my recipes for one of them. If I start with ground beef, I can come up with a meal pretty quick.
I was just introduced to big batch ground beef. Have you ever heard of this? Basically you cook up the ground beef with onions and garlic, and whenever you are going to use ground beef, you pull this out! It’s already cooked, and flavoured! It would save so much time, and you would always have ground beef on hand!
Here’s the recipe (from the link above):
BIG BATCH GROUND BEEF
Use a food processor to mince onions and garlic in a flash.
4 lb (2 kg) ground beef 4 onions, minced 4 cloves garlic, minced
- Cook ground beef in stockpot or Dutch oven, using medium-high heat for 9 to 10 minutes, breaking into small chunks with back of spoon until browned and completely cooked. Drain in colander. Return to pot. Add onions and garlic; cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 12 to 15 minutes until vegetables soften.
- Spread mixture in a single layer on several foil-lined baking trays; cover loosely with plastic wrap and freeze just until meat is firm (about 1 hour).
- Loosen frozen beef into chunks and scoop meal-sized portions into freezer bags or sealable containers. Freeze for up to 3 months.Cook’s Notes: When adding frozen cooked ground beef to recipes calling for browned ground beef, you may need to increase the recipe’s cooking time slightly.
The problem with meat is, if it is not stored properly it can go bad. Which is wasteful, but also dangerous! But Canadian Beef have a Beef Packaging Guide so you can ensure you are storing your beef properly. Check out the Beef Packaging Guide (you’ll have to scroll down to download the pdf)
They have a great website with tons and tons of info, recipes, and everything you need to know about Canadian Beef !
